Resilience Research Connects the World: LIR Hosts the 12th International Symposium on Resilience Research in Mainz

Three days of scientific discussions, new research findings, and international encounters: From 23 to 25 September 2026, the Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research (LIR) hosted the #12TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON RESILIENCE RESEARCH in Mainz. 

Under the theme “Different People, Different Contexts,” researchers from various countries and disciplines came together to discuss current developments in resilience research, exchange new perspectives, and strengthen international collaboration. 

The contributions highlighted the broad thematic scope of current resilience research. Topics included neural mechanisms of resilience, sex- and gender-specific factors, resilience following collective traumatic experiences, and resilience in the context of conditions such as depression and cancer. Societal, legal, and ethical aspects of resilience research were also discussed. 

A particular focus was placed on supporting early career researchers. Even before the official start of the symposium, a workshop for Early Career Scientists was held at LIR. During the event, early career researchers also had the opportunity to present their work in short talks and poster presentations and discuss their research with international colleagues. This year’s Poster Award was also presented during the poster sessions. Due to a tie in the voting, the award was presented to two researchers: Dr. Jan Broll and Sophie Streit, each receiving 150€. 

Although the symposium has now come to an end, the exchange will continue: The contacts, discussions, and research ideas initiated in Mainz are intended to contribute to future international collaborations and joint research projects.
